Signs of Focus
It’s so easy for busy professionals to have their attention pulled in multiple directions. So much to do... seemingly so little time. In the fast paced world of Silicon Valley startups this is especially true. On a key project it’s vital that the objective remains clear and consistent in the minds of everyone on the team (well, at least until new info causes the objective to change but then it’s important that everyone shifts directions together without losing valuable time.)
Email, status reports, interactive discussions all accomplish this but sometimes a low-tech visual approach adds value. On a project with a very aggressive schedule I sometimes make signs with just the target date and post them everywhere. (Well, I have personally posted them in the women’s restroom while asking one of the guys to do likewise in the men’s room.)
On one project in particular, I do believe these simple signs helped keep us focused. Seeing “10/10” here, there and everywhere around our building was a constant, concise reminder of our group objective. Having teenagers at home, I, by necessity, do plenty of active nagging so I welcome ways to remind the adults on my engineering team that time is short and focus is essential. Try it and see for yourself!
